1984 - 1993

1984

  • 31 January - SBC-12 was launched as the third free-to-air terrestrial television channel. The ideal of the channel was to promote and appreciate arts and culture towards Singaporeans and to add vibrancy to Tamil, Malay and children’s programming. Documentaries and current affairs were broadcasted too beside art-related programmes. The channel was also known for its sports coverage, notably the Malaysia Cup, which garnered millions of Singaporeans watching at home, just to see their favourite local players, and major sporting events such as the Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics, Asian Games, SEA Games, Commonwealth Games, FIFA World Cup and the English Premier League.

  • In celebration of Singapore's 25th National Day, 'The Awakening', a Chinese television drama series was produced by SBC in 1984. Often regarded as one of the pioneer Chinese dramas in Singapore, many considered it as a classic among Singaporeans, alongside with its theme song. Late veteran actor Huang Wenyong and Xiang Yun later became famous through this drama. Both of them were often regarded as the first generation of on-screen star couple. There are two parts to the series, with two sections in each part. Each section talks about the different parts of Singapore's history timeline, from the arrival of Chinese immigrants in Singapore to the lives of Singaporeans at the time in 1984.

1988

  • Star Search Singapore was a television show that ran from 1988 to 2010, held once every two years. It started out in 1988 as a local talent show, restricted to only Singapore residents. Star Search became one of SBC's main sources to scout for talents in the 1990s after SBC discontinued its drama training courses. The show opened up to contestants from regions in the South East Asia as well. Zoe Tay, the 'Queen of Caldecott Hill', was the winner of first Star Search in 1988. It brings about a new era of TV Stardom, where these contestants were treated as TV stars. Other local stars that Singaporeans are familiar with were born from the run too, such as Chew Chor Meng, Ivy Lee, Christopher Lee, Jacelyn Tay and many more. Star Search had many classic moments that Singaporeans will not forget, like how Jacelyn Tay won the contest with a black eye, and Jeff Wang acted as a crab in the final round of the contest.

1990

  • On 1 August 1990, in conjunction for the 1990 National Day Parade to be broadcasted in stereo audio, SBC began stereo audio broadcast on all its radio and television channels.
1992

  • SBC’s experiments with incorporation of gay themes in television series with “锦绣前程" ("A bright tomorrow"),which was aired at prime time. This was met with expression of disgust via letters of complaints and newspaper write-ups, resulting in the shelving of such themes and subplots.

1993

  • Produced in 1993, The Unbeatables is a Chinese drama serial best remembered for being the first show in Singapore to touch on the topic of gambling. Featuring both Zoe Tay and Li Nanxing, the drama won the 'Most Popular Drama' award in the 1994 Star Awards, with Zoe Tay and Li Nan Xing voted as the 'Most Popular Male/Female Artiste' as well. With the success of the drama, both of them went on to become the 'Queen and King of Caldecott Hill' among the actors and actresses in SBC. It also made them one of the most popular on-screen star couples in Singapore. Due to the popularity of the drama, two sequels The Unbeatables II and The Unbeatables III were produced subsequently in 1996 and 2002. This was considered a rare move in Singapore's television history.
